In the book "Milwaukee Garage Band: Generation of Grassroots bands" written by Peter Roller, there is a survey about the goals of forming an amateur rock band. The highest percentage 28% is for reaction and each for creative expression, for camaraderie, and for respects of peers is 20%. After I did my interviews with two amateur rock band members, I found the data is well consistent with the facts I've got from them. When I asked them " what did you want to form a band at first? What do you sought by playing in your own band?", both of them addressed that they play music in their own rock band at first just for fun and then they also want to be known by more people in high school and make more friends, thus expanding their social network.
While Rita forms a rock band more simply just for the reaction, Lance seeks more for the respect of peers and camaraderie within rock band members. I think such consistency objectively reveals the goals of most amateur rock band. Also, in the third interview, the answer of Mia, who is planning to play her own music in college, is also coincident with the results of the survey, as she said she wanted to form a band or just a duet simply for fun, for making her college life more interesting and meaningful. |
