The Interview with Lance
Lance is the singer of Tank Man rock band, which was formed by him and three of his friends when they were in high school. As an amateur high school rock, Tank Man mainly performed in some school art events or singing competitions. Besides playing the songs of their favorite bands, Green Day, Tank Man also plays some original songs which are mainly written by Lance. Not only playing Rock & Roll, Tank Man also performs songs of other styles, ranging from folk to electric, from country to Hip Hop.
Asking about why do they want to form a band at first, which is a question addressed in most secondary sources, Lance said," our goal is really simple. We just want to expand our social networks, make ourselves be known by more people in school, and meet some cool guys who also love playing music or their original songs."
"Have you ever thought to become a star one day in the future?" ( The question is drawn from Peter Roller's book, Milwaukee Garage Band: Generation of Grassroots bands, in which the seek for stardom of amateur rock bands has been discussed and analyzed.) "Of course not. We never thought we could become rock stars in the future. Actually, each of them has his or her own dream and works hard to pursue it, but unfortunately no one's dream is to become a rock star, haha." answered by Lance.
"What kind of obstacles has your band encountered to form a band?" ( This question is also consistent with the discussion of difficulties which amateur rock bands usually have in Peter Roller's book, Milwaukee Garage Band: Generation of Grassroots bands.) " Not so much, actually, but the time conflict is a big issue. It's hard to find some fixed time for rehearsal when each member has got his or her own schedule. Besides that, since sometimes each one prefers different music style to perform, to unify the style of band is also a tough work." Lance said.
The issue of disagreement among rock band members has been addressed in the film, Almost Famous. Not only some different in music styles, the members in Almost famous rock band also have some problems on personal issues with each other. The solution to such a disagreement is rather complicate. However, asking about how to make an agreement on the music style, Lance's answer is quite simple," most of time, it's the song writer's call. (which is always his)"
"What do you think your band has brought to you?" This question is addressed in the article, Three Ten-year-old Chinese Boys Formed a Band and Play Rock Music, written by Wu Xiaoyun, as the three boys says they just find the pure pleasure and enjoyment while playing their own music. Lance's answer is playing music in a band enables each member to better communicate with and understand others. " It is an amazing process of integration. On one hand, I'm very happy to know everyone's different ideas about the music style and the ways we should play, because it displays the individuality and diversity. On the other hand, while the individuality has been revealed, the integration, which derives from the final agreement, comes after. Through the process of making an agreement, we also are aware of what kind of the flaws are in our own opinions and try to understand and appreciate others' thoughts. That does not only help us better our music, but also better ourselves."
